Our Story
three generations dedicated to the art of furniture restoration
The Whitaker family’s connection to furniture restoration spans three generations and more than half a century. It began with Bernard Whitaker, the first in the family to master the highly specialised craft. He was also an expert at French polishing. Working from a small basement workshop in Newlands, Wellington, Bernard built a reputation for dedication, skill, and an unwavering work ethic—values he passed on to his son, Patrick.
By 1981, after years of learning at his father’s side, Patrick and his wife Michelle launched A1 Furniture Restoration. Through hard work, long hours, and a commitment to quality, they shaped the business into a trusted name across the Wellington region for over 40 years.
For the past 17 years, their son Jake has continued the family tradition, learning the craft from both his father and Herman. Herman was for many years the team’s master repairer who immigrated from Austria in his twenties. He worked with hand tools long before power tools were common and remained a valuable mentor to Jake well into his nineties. His passing in 2025 at age 97 marked the end of an era, but his influence lives on in the techniques and standards he instilled in Jake.
In 2021, Patrick retired after four decades in the business. Jake and his wife Jane purchased A1 Furniture Restoration, proudly carrying the family legacy forward. With furniture restoration also running in Jane’s family, the craft truly seems to be in their blood.
Michelle (Jake's Mum), remains the company’s experienced Office Manager and whilst Patrick has retired, it is not un-common to see him on the road with Jake giving him a helping hand transporting furniture.
Today, A1 Furniture Restoration remains a small, dedicated team committed to excellence, offering high‑quality furniture restoration and upholstery services to the wider Wellington region, and honouring the traditions and craftsmanship passed down through generations.
